Call for Articles: Write for Faragha, Your East African Privacy Magazine

DPO Privacy Centre (East Africa) is calling for articles for Faragha, a digital magazine dedicated to data protection, privacy and digital rights in East Africa. Faragha means "privacy" in Swahili, the region's most widely spoken local language, particularly in Kenya, Tanzania and parts of Uganda. The first issue will be published on Data Privacy Day, 28th January 2027.

Why Faragha?

Data protection authorities across the region are building capacity. At the same time, fintech and mobile money are growing fast, AI tools are being adopted ahead of regulation, and public debate is intense on children's online safety and on digital ID and biometric systems. Despite this, practitioners often work in silos, with few regional platforms for sharing case law, comparing regulatory approaches or building a professional community.

Faragha aims to fill that gap. It will:

  1. Give in-depth, region-specific analysis of privacy laws and policy developments,
  2. Promote understanding of compliance obligations across sectors,
  3. Give regulators and practitioners visibility and recognition, and
  4. Amplify East African perspectives in global data protection discourse.

Who Can Submit?

We welcome contributions from people in and beyond East Africa, including:

  1. Data protection practitioners and DPOs,
  2. Regulators,
  3. Lawyers,
  4. Academics and students,
  5. Civil society and digital rights advocates,
  6. Technology professionals (cybersecurity, AI, data analytics),
  7. Fintech and startup professionals, and
  8. Journalists and media practitioners.

What Are We Looking For?

Articles should fit one of these sections:

  1. Deep Dive: Sector-focused articles on Banking and Fintech, Telecoms, Artificial Intelligence, Children's Online Safety, Public Services, Health Data, Cross-Border Data Flows, and Entertainment and Media.
  2. Case Law and Regulatory Analysis: Reviews and interpretations of key regulatory decisions, enforcement actions, court judgements and rulings from across the region.
  3. Opinion and Thought Leadership: Expert commentary on emerging issues, the tension between compliance and innovation, and human rights perspectives on data protection.

We value regional grounding, originality and practical insight. Articles that draw on East African laws, cases, regulators or lived practice will stand out.
